All about Geomatics Engineering (GE)
1. What is GATE?
A national-level entrance examination of India is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE, that generally examine the comprehensive understanding of different undergraduate discipline in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Science/ Commerce/ Arts/ Humanities for admission to postgraduate programs. The GATE examination was first conducted on 26 February 1983, Saturday by five IITs and IISc Bengaluru with 44 exam centers in different cities in India. 2. Who conduct the GATE?
The GATE is being organized by selected one of eight institutes from IISc Bengaluru and seven IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee), on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
3. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering divided into two sections, one is General Aptitude (GA) and candidate selected subjects such as Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), Electrical Engineering (EE), Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Metallurgical Engineering (MT), Mining Engineering (MN), Petroleum Engineering (PE) etc. out of 30 subjects.
In the year of 2022 two new subject was introduce i.e. Geomatics Engineering (GE) and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NM).
4. What are the benefits through GATE?
There are several benefits of qualifying the GATE Examination in Geomatics Engineering (GE)-

5. General Aptitude (GA): General aptitude is a common and compulsory paper for all the candidates appear in this examination for all the subjects including Geomatics Engineering (GE).
6. Geomatics Engineering (GE): In the year of 2022 first introduce Geomatics Engineering (GE) as a subject for appearing GATE examination conducted by IIT Kharagpur. In this year 4325 students registered for the examination and appeared 2977. In the year of 2023, 3058 students registered for the examination and appeared 2259. In the year of 2024, 3238 students registered for the examination and appeared 2492.
7. Eligibility Criteria:
Candidates who are currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program or who have completed any government approved degree program in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Science/ Commerce/ Arts/ Humanities are eligible to appear for GATE.
Candidates who possess certification from any such professional societies must ensure that those examinations are approved by MoE/AICTE/UGC/ UPSC as being equivalent to B.E./ B.Tech./ B.Arch./ B.Planning, etc.
Candidates who have obtained/are pursuing their qualifying degree from countries other than India: Candidates must be currently in the 3rd or higher years or must have completed their Bachelor’s degree (of at least three years duration) in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Science/ Commerce/ Arts/ Humanities.
Master’s degree in any branch of Arts / Science / Mathematics / Statistics / Computer Applications or equivalent.

8. Syllabus:
A. The syllabus for the common and compulsory paper General aptitude (GA) is-
i. Verbal Aptitude
Basic English grammar: tenses, articles, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, verb-noun agreement, and other parts of speech Basic vocabulary: words, idioms, and phrases in context, reading and comprehension, Narrative sequencing.
ii. Quantitative Aptitude
Data interpretation: data graphs (bar graphs, pie charts, and other graphs representing data), 2- and 3-dimensional plots, maps, and tables Numerical computation and estimation: ratios, percentages, powers, exponents and logarithms, permutations and combinations, and series Mensuration and geometry Elementary statistics and probability.
iii. Analytical Aptitude
Logic: deduction and induction, Analogy, Numerical relations and reasoning.
iv. Spatial Aptitude
Transformation of shapes: translation, rotation, scaling, mirroring, assembling, and grouping paper folding, cutting, and patterns in 2 and 3 dimensions.
B. The syllabus for the subject paper Geomatics Engineering (GE) is-
There are three section in this paper "Part-A" that is common and compulsory for all; Part B1 or B2 can be selected during the Exam. B1 - Surveying and Mapping or B2 -Image Processing and Analysis.
Part-A (Common)
i. Engineering Mathematics: Surveying measurements, Accuracy, Precision, Most probable value, Errors and their adjustments, Regression analysis, Correlation coefficient, Least square adjustment, Statistical significant value, Chi square test.
ii. Remote Sensing: Basic concept, Electromagnetic spectrum, Spectral signature, Resolutions Spectral, Spatial, Temporal and Radiometric, Platforms and Sensors, Remote Sensing Data Products - PAN, Multispectral, Microwave, Thermal, Hyperspectral, Visual and digital interpretation methods
iii. GNSS: Principle used, Components of GNSS, Data collection methods, DGPS, Errors in observations and corrections.
iv. GIS: Introduction, Data Sources, Data Models and Data Structures, Algorithms, DBMS, Creation of Databases (spatial and non-spatial), Spatial analysis - Interpolation, Buffer, Overlay, Terrain Modeling and Network analysis.
Part-B1: Surveying and Mapping
i. Maps: Importance of maps to engineering projects, Types of maps, Scales and uses, Plotting accuracy, Map sheet numbering, Coordinate systems- Cartesian and geographical, map projections, map datum – MSL, Geoid, spheroid, WGS-84.
ii. Land Surveying: Various Levels, Levelling methods, Compass, Theodolite and Total Station and their uses, Tachometer, Trigonometric levelling, Traversing, Triangulation and Trilateration.
iii. Aerial Photogrammetry: Types of photographs, Flying height and scale, Relief (height) displacement, Stereoscopy, 3-D Model, Height determination using Parallax Bar, Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Slope.
Part-B2: Image Processing and Analysis
i. Data Quantization and Processing: Sampling and quantization theory, Principle of Linear System, Convolution, Continuous and Discrete Fourier Transform.
ii. Digital Image Processing: Digital image characteristics: image histogram and scattergram and their significance, Variance-Covariance matrix, Correlation matrix and their significance.
iii. Radiometric and Geometric Corrections: Registration and Resampling techniques.
iv. Image Enhancement: Contrast Enhancement: Linear and Non-linear methods; Spatial Enhancement: Noise and Spatial filters
v. Image Transformation: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Discriminant Analysis, Colour transformations (RGB - IHS, CMYK), Indices (Ratios, NDVI, NDWI).
vi. Image Segmentation and Classification: Simple techniques.

9. Mode of Examination: The test papers will be in English language and mode of examination is Computer Based Text (CBT).
10. Examination Pattern: General Aptitude + Subjects (Candidate’s Selected Subject(s) (a) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) (b) Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and/or (c) Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions)
11. Duration: Total 3 Hours
12. Marks: General Aptitude (15 Marks) + Subjects (85 Marks[Part -A: 55 Marks and Part B1 or B2: 30 Marks)
13. Marking Scheme: Questions carries 1 marks and 2 marks.
14. Negative Marking: For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be negative marking. For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. For a 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. There is no negative marking for wrong answer(s) to MSQ or NAT questions. There is no partial marking in MSQ.
